The Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging Strategist will report directly to our Vice President, Talent and HR with responsibility for the development, implementation and measurement of internal and external program strategies and activities for our employees and the clients we serve. 


This includes contributing to the newly funded Digital Main Street (DMS) program and related offerings we deliver by:


  • Developing, delivering and managing business development strategies that identify and attract new small business clients (spanning hospitality, retail, and service industries) from the five key equity-seeking groups, including Womxn, 2SLGBTQ+ community, Indigenous communities, persons with disabilities, and racialized people, as well as Francophone entrepreneurs. This work includes:
    • Defining business development objectives, target outcomes and success measures
    • Identifying new opportunities, channels and associated strategies to reach, attract and engage underrepresented business owners
    • Acquiring, managing and tracking clients leads systemically (in our CRM), and helping to drive increased use of programs and services
    • Developing and executing a DMS partner promotion and outreach plan that facilitates the establishment of strong relationships and mutually beneficial two-way engagement with organizations that directly support business owners from equity-seeking groups
    • Documenting and reporting on D, I and B progress against plan, and tracking of associated metrics
  • Contribute expertise and recommendations to the development and implementation of DMS program elements and associated client communications. This work includes:
    • Directly contributing to DMS programs, services, content, training/workshops and other events
    • Identifying opportunities for promotion of entrepreneurs and related success stories that align with our content calendar and corporate objectives and contribute to a greater sense of belonging amongst our community and ecosystem through inclusive marketing and communications
    • Researching, sourcing, and preparing speakers for DMS events
    • Developing and documenting key program and client data to track progress, and overall DMS program goals with a focus on D, I and B objectives
  • Directly contributing to the development and implementation of the DMS student recruitment strategy, which aims to engage and provide meaningful employment opportunities for digital marketing students from every walk of life (including members of key equity-seeking groups) with small businesses. This work includes, but is not limited to:
    • Directly contributing expertise and recommendations to key student talent objectives, recruitment strategies, and overall work experience for the DMS Program
    • Supporting the creation of recruitment initiatives and supporting materials that target a rich array of talented students from equity-seeking groups
    • Contributing to HR peer groups, advisor recruitment and associated DMS activities
    • Explore new opportunities with current and prospective community talent and recruitment partners that address our D, I and B objectives


The Strategist will also support the development and implementation of complementary initiatives. This work includes:


  • Developing a Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging Strategy for Invest Ottawa with a roadmap of external and internal actions (programs, initiatives and services) that support our diversity, inclusion and belonging goals over the next 24 months. This work includes:
    • Contributing to the evolution of Invest Ottawa’s Balanced Teams (our internal employee committee dedicated to fostering a culture of belonging) and associated activities
    • Providing strategic counsel, coaching and recommendations to Invest Ottawa team leaders, and making recommendations on internal strategies, programs and policies
    • Contributing expertise and support to our Discovery Circles, which bring together employees and clients, and aim to create safe space for underrepresented communities on an element of shared identity (such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, etc.).
  • Contributing to the evolution and broad implementation of Invest Ottawa’s Diversity and Inclusion Guidelines, encompassing internal and external actions. This work includes:




  • A leader who is passionate about helping us make Ottawa the best place to live, work, learn and play and who can support us with helping our client community build more balanced teams
  • 3-5 years of experience in the development and implementation of diversity and inclusion strategies, initiatives and activities; this includes the creation and execution of project plans, tracking and reporting on outcomes
  • A strong community builder with excellent communication, collaboration, interpersonal and problem-solving skills that will enable us to collaborate with many stakeholders and strategic partners including those from key equity-seeking groups identified by the Government of Canada
  • In-depth knowledge of leading D, I & B practices, policies, processes and evaluation tools with knowledge of relevant legislation as it pertains to Diversity, Inclusion and Belongingness, such as the Human Rights Code and AODA, and previous experience with talent management/operations
  • Proven abilities to execute multiple tasks simultaneously with quality results, while managing confidential and sensitive materials in a professional manner
  • Results-oriented with excellent organizational and project management skills
  • Self-starter with strong leadership skills who is highly proactive and takes initiative
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and demands in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team player
  • Advanced skills with Microsoft Office
  • Strong English oral, reading and writing skills; additional linguistic abilities (oral, reading and writing) are highly desirable
